Take A “Drive” With Meals On Wheels Solano County As They Keep Seniors Warm This Winter
I was lucky enough to be invited to “ride along” with a Meals on Wheels volunteer driver back in 2018 as part of a KUIC promotional collaboration with the organization; that experience has stuck with me for many reasons. The volunteer driver I hung out with (I remember him as “Brian,” but I could be wrong) made a point of truly connecting with all the seniors we delivered meals to in Vacaville that afternoon. We would often be invited into their homes or apartments, staying long enough to have a conversation and share a few smiles (and we had more than a few regular food recipients ask who I was and why I was tagging along). The larger take away for me that afternoon was that Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers are doing a lot more than dropping off food to hungry seniors. These volunteers were making important daily contact with people who might not otherwise get it; in fact, these food delivery moments can often serve as a kind of “welfare check” to help establish if a senior is doing alright. Meals on Wheels is committed to local seniors in a host of different ways, including keeping them warm during the winter months. Please check out their “Winter Drive for Seniors” event going on now through December 13th: the organization is looking for new, unused Handwarmers, Socks, Gloves and Hats. You can get all the information you need to donate, including drop-off times and location, under “Announcements” at www.kuic.com 🙂
